Helen L. Coons, Ph.D., ABPP is a board-certified clinical health psychologist and a national leader in women’s health and mental health and psychosocial oncology. Dr. Coons received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Temple University in 1990 after interning in Medical Psychology at the Duke University Medical Center. She is an Associate Professor and Clinical Director, Women’s Behavioral Health and Wellness Services, Department of Psychiatry, University of Colorado School of Medicine (CUSOM). Dr. Coons also serves as the Co-Director of the Women’s Sexual Health Consultation Service, a Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology and Department of Psychiatry integrated service. She is known for her clinical work and innovative, collaborative program development in women’s health settings such as women’s primary care, obstetrics and gynecology, urogynecology, surgical and medical oncology and sexual medicine. Dr. Coons also routinely consults at a national level on women’s health and psychosocial oncology care and patient resources. She presented at the Institute of Medicine National Cancer Policy Board meeting on Psychosocial Service Needs among Women with Breast Cancer; served on four of the Living Beyond Breast Cancer (LBBC) professional advisory committees to develop patient resources including one on sexual health and intimacy; was on an advisory committee for an advanced breast cancer survey for the oncology division of Novartis Pharmaceuticals; and currently sits on LBBC’s Medical Advisory Board.  Dr. Coons was the founding chair of the APA Leadership Institute for Women in Psychology from 2007-2014, served on the APA Board of Directors from 2016-2018 and is the current President of the Society for Health Psychology. A fellow of the American Psychological Association, Dr. Coons has received multiple awards for her distinguished work in clinical health psychology and women’s health.
